Mochitsuki – Rice cake making festival

Traditionally we, Japanese people have rice cake making event during new year time. Sometime at schools, sometime at  neighborhood association, we have this event.  The rice cake  is called “Mochi”, and rice cake making event is called “Mochitsuki” in Japanese.  We, especially all the children like “Mochitsuki” festival very much, but this has another aspect as a religious ritual.

During today’s tour (Route B, Sumo wrestler’s ride), we came across  a chance to join the Mochi pounding ceremony. A few Sumo wrestlers whose stable locates this neighborhood have also joined this event. The one in this photo is famous Sumo wrestler, Takami Zakari (高見盛). One of our guests were also appointed to pound the Mochi.

Mochi and Chanko soup (special food for Sumo wrestler) were served to us at free of charge! We were so lucky!!

This kind of  something unexpected surprise always makes us very happy.
